James heads the employment team and his practice covers the full range of employment advice from contentious to non-contentious matters. He has particular expertise in advising companies, directors and entrepreneurs on human resources projects arising from acquisitions, mergers and buyouts, including advice on TUPE, post acquisition harmonisation, executive level hiring, severances and compromise agreements, management remuneration, terms and conditions, redundancies and general day to day HR problems. A long stint on secondment with a large listed US company means that James is very aware that his advice needs to be practical and to the point. He covers a wide range of sectors including pharmaceuticals, science, IT, recruitment, transport, education, professional services, media and has acted for football and rugby clubs.
James also advises individuals and is very experienced in handling tribunal claims for employers and employees on a wide range of disputes. Examples include:
- defending 100+ TUPE claims following an insolvency buyout,
- securing non-compete injunctions to restrain former employees of a major car hire company,
- defending a well known TV production company against a discrimination action brought by a presenter
- recovering considerable damages for senior executives in unfair and wrongful dismissal and discrimination cases.
He qualified in 1993 and joined Henmans in August 2006 following long stints with two other large practices in the South East and a specialist corporate firm.
He is also a member of the Employment Lawyers Association, and is referred to on the Employment Experts Guide. He is happy to provide seminars and speeches on employment topics.
