Evidence suggests that cycle lanes are creating as many problems for cyclists as they solve with the existence of defined lanes leading motorists to allow less passing room when overtaking a cyclist. According to the cyclists’ organisation the CTC , whilst the absence of a cycle lane encourages motorists to move away from the cyclist, the presence of a lane seems to lead the motorist to feel that they need not move over and can use the entirety of the space within their own lane.
